This five-week course provides participants with an understanding of the legal and normative frameworks on gender and human rights, examining international and regional human rights systems. The course explores case studies illustrating practical applications of human rights in humanitarian and development settings. Participants gain skills necessary for the advancement of social justice through a gender lens. Topics covered include: origins and evolution of gender equality and its links to human rights and social justice, international normative and legal framework for gender equality and human rights, key women’s human rights issues, analyses of the ‘gender and human rights’ agenda, and intersectionality.
The course is part of the Gender in Development and Humanitarian Assistance (GDHA) Diploma continuing education program targeting students and practitioners organised by the Institute for Women’s Studies in the Arab World (IWSAW) and the Continuing Education Program (CEP) at the Lebanese American University with Human Rights Education Associates (HREA).
Classes take place on 22 May, 29 May, 5 June and 12 June from 18:00-21:00 at LAU's Beirut campus. It also possible to participate in the course through web-conferencing.
